Re: machines are coming for your jobs

Are you fucking kidding me? OCR is just about the most unimpressive, old and overdone category of computer vision there is.

Any moron can whip up a 100-line Python script that does the same thing with Tesseract. How do you think spambots beat CAPTCHAs?

HOLY SHIT GUYS BREAK CAPTCHAS THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER MUH STRONG AI MUH SINGULARITY

Idiots.

Re: machines are coming for your jobs

it's impressive in that it beat what people thought would work as a turing test.  and nobody's claiming that computers capable of AGI are "in development"  but there is no reason to believe that its impossible within this century. http://www.bu.edu/thenerve/archives/fal … -rewiring/ the point is that it wouldn't need any software to be written for it at all, you just need to roughly emulate an infant's brain structure and this should depend on the rate at which neuroscience will progress

The Turing test is an awful metric that does not amount to anything noteworthy. Simple Markov chains, text parsing and regexes can beat it. The Turing test was already passed nearly 50 years ago by a small program called ELIZA. Today, writing a chatbot to pass the Turing test is a trivial task that a bored or newbie programmer will write in a spare afternoon to refresh their skills.

From what I've been told by a few academics, and this might not be true, true AI is way off and it's basically just used as a means to get a bunch of rich people to donate to computer science. It's an interesting field, but "true" AI from what I've read is pretty far off. You can do a lot of stuff that looks like real AI though with regular comp sci.

They've been making predictions of human-level AI since the 70s, if not even earlier. The timescale of predictions usually ranges between ten to thirty years, from what I've read.

Re: machines are coming for your jobs

The biggest issue is shifting the job market and encouraging people to get jobs that we'll need in the future rather than ones that will be done autonomously. Technological advancement and evolution of the means of production is constantly happening, so I doubt there'll be any big crises but I don't see a completely harmless shift either.

Either way, technological advancement and autonomy are pretty sweet.
