A bow and Arrow is better than spear. Especially when poisoning.

Nope, not anymore.

But spears are like one of the most primitive and simple weapon ever devised by man. A stick with a pointy tip that lets you jab a person without getting too close while being insanely cheal and easy to make. (Supposedly making a sword requires a good degree of blacksmithing skills. I read it takes years to master smithing out a katana properly. You cant just bash hot metal with a hammer...unless you're going for some orcesque level of quality. A rough piece of crap with what might be considered a sharp edge primarily used fkr chopping since it probably cant even slice butter or impale a piece of paper)]

Dude. The swords of old times where indeed not all sharp. Some of them where made to cut while breaking bones. They usually where not as sharp as the sword people today have in mind.
Bow and Arrow is relatively easy to make. Done it myself a few time, every one was enough to kill small game, or bigger game when using poison. And you can find out a lot about poison - even when civilization is collapsed, books are there to read. At least for the first few generations.

Re: preparing for the collapse of civilization

Well Roman swords were undoubtedly sharp since the entire point was to thrust it into your body and cut open a giant fucking wound from where you're blood and guts would pour out. Oh and the Thracians/Dacians had these nasty swords that were like sickles meant to decapitate.

But of course swords are not meant to be insanely sharp, except for unique things like a katana. You don't want to weaken the sword by excessive sharpening. Swords are also not as heavy as people keep assuming. They're usually never more than 5Ib and that's the bigger swords. Your average sword was something like 2-3Ib at most. Hell, modern rifles are heavier than a claymore and those swords were fucking massive.

There are a lot of misconceptions about "primitive" weapons, primarily thanks to Hollywood and video games. For one, sword fights weren't some sort of sword tango. They were "I'm gonna use this tool in my hand to crush your skull, slice your throat, chop off a limb, impale you or otherwise cause death in any manner I can" whether it meant using a sword normally, or flipping it upside down and smashing your face with the hilt before using it like a saw to slit your throat.

Shields are also misunderstood. For one, they are often wood coated in some cloth or leather. They don't "block" attacks as much as deflect(cause your arm takes the force of the strike). The common planked style barely lasted very long under a constant beating. Shields were also used as weapons to bludgeon or lock up a limb(stuff your shield under their arm and stick a sword through the rib).

And weapons broke. Maybe modern made swords are pretty resistant thanks to modern metallurgy and quality construction and material, but back then the wealthy folk had somebody carry extra weapons to the battlefield, as well as armor, while the poorer folk had to rely on picking up a dead guy's weapon if their's broke.

You sloth and your tools.
And yeah, European swords weren't especially sharp most of the time.

And do you intend to use your bow to strangle your enemy when they get close with their spear?
