Re: Jordan B Peterson

I think I agree with a lot of what he says. I mean there's other ways to get your life together than what he talks about but in general it's kinda hard to argue with most of his points. The mythology is just used as examples and ways to provide imagery and whatever to his points he makes that actually draw from the psychology literature and other social science literature. I don't know the literature well enough to say he has a really accurate interpretation of it but he probably does, nobody seems to disagree much with it who's qualified that I've seen. That'd be interesting though if someone who's into psychology research had a different interpretation of the literature and put up an argument. Like there's biologists and neuroscientists and all that which usually tend to agree with most of what he's saying about the actual literature itself.

I don't have the time or inclination to dig through science journals like I used to though. I did regarding the I.Q. thing for a while back in the day when I was trying to argue against his points and looking back I was on the wrong side of it, I think. Wes was arguing against my points and idk how much new science there's been regarding that shit but I'm pretty sure he had me beat in those arguments iirc.

He doesn't talk about economics that much though which is probably good because I don't think he'd end up accurately reflecting that science. Or maybe he would? He's pretty good about not specifically agreeing with one specific ideology.

Re: Jordan B Peterson

He's basically just Carl Jung and Joseph Campell reiterated for the 2010s with anti-marxist anti-postmodernist twist.

Re: Jordan B Peterson

Eh, I think a lot of Jung can be dismissed these days. Never studied Campell, but from what I remember Jung doesn't really stand up to empirical rigor, too much theory not enough data to back it up. It leaves a legacy wrt personality testing and all of that, which I think is a little more rigorous these days but still not something we can rely on 100%, but his work itself isn't really taken seriously anymore.

They're like historical introductions to psychology and not really used in practice anymore. People talk about them as like, the beginnings of the field, but nobody really uses their actual findings, things have gotten way past that. I've watched a several interviews and shit from him and I don't remember hearing him talk about Jung even once. Maybe he does? Idk. I haven't seen it.

Honestly he talks more about evolution than anything and usually cites specific science in writing that hasn't been discredited or anything.

There's a lot of stuff that's speculatory or not nailed down, but so what? The only shit I'd really hate to see him talk more about is climate change, which he tends to err on the side of "it's probably not that big of a deal". Not an actual quote but that's the feeling I get, which doesn't really match the science we have. He does have a lot of stuff that is vague, but so? Who cares? It's not like he wants to be anyone's primary or only source of scientific knowledge, if you treat any public speaker as such you're fucking up.

The biggest take away for me is his self help penchant and anti sjw type beliefs. It shits on garbage beliefs from SJW's which is good, and it advocates getting your life together and has some pretty okay ways of doing so. Also I *really* like his philosophy of meaning. That's one of the only things that'll probably really stick with me from him. As in, meaning can be derived from responsibility. I've had that sense for a long time and it's why I'll probably end up having a family some day. I've been partying and fucking and doing drugs my whole life, and it feels empty, and I really like what he talks about wrt responsibility and getting your life together. It's something I've wanted before I listened to him but I just like the way he puts it.

Re: Jordan B Peterson

I think the biggest problem is people get so caught up on specific people and start hyper-analyzing these types of public intellectuals. No one is going to know everything. Nobody is perfect, especially not public intellectuals who get grilled in interviews and then cut up to twist their words. People get borderline obsessed with these sorts of characters, when they're just fucking people with some really interesting / cool / useful ideas. Treat them as such and all of this combativeness seems really fucking dumb.

Re: Jordan B Peterson

He does talk about "Archtypes" a lot tho which I guess is pretty jungian, mostly in reference to religious texts though and I don't think he claims that shit is  like, based in hard science idk

Honestly I wouldn't call that psychology at all, I'd call it philosophy.

Re: Jordan B Peterson

He talks a lot more about that stuff in his lectures than the public interviews

Re: Jordan B Peterson

I like certain things about him. He really knows nothing about philosophy and he should stop pretending he doesn't. I think there's really something to the idea that he's gained a following by being a sort of cool anti-sjw surrogate father figure to his primarily disaffected young male fans. Plus his diet stuff is fucking hilarious.

Public persona attracts criticism, detractors.

Re: Jordan B Peterson

His diet stuff is nothing new though. There's pretty good evidence that zero carb diets are beneficial in some cases, epilepsy, morbid obesity, etc.

It's gotten to the point though that he's just repeating the same 5 conversations over and over.
