Re: new planet maybe

That's cool. Astronomers were, in fact, discussing a possible planet out there that could be perturbing the orbits of comets in the Oort cloud so that could be it too.

pluto is a planet

I wish it was again. They should make it so due to massive popularity alone.

Re: new planet maybe

Please note the words "possible".

No confirmation.

No proof.

Folks have been talking for decades about possible "Planet Xs". Even talks of possible Brown Dwarves and Jupiter class monstrosities beyond the known solar system. Hell, even the wingnuts got into the act with the whole Niburu thing. At LSU, the astronomy dude was talking about Nemesis, the possible dark companion star.

To me, this is a "hey, we have this. put more endowments to our programs" news than a discovery. Much like they always are announcing they found water on Mars, but we have found it several times.

What?

So you're going to let some committee decide what you think is or isn't a planet?

It's a planet to me. Fuck the scientists man. This is a NINE planet solar system.

Re: new planet maybe

Of course, the Pluto thing was decided by 5% of the professional astronomers in the world. Of course, no geologists were present who actually like and study rocks. Even world sized rocks. Not lenses and magnitudes.

True, but then you'll have to reclassify all the dwarf planets as planets now and I don't think no one wants to memorize 14 planets.

Re: new planet maybe

does it even matter really

this theory has a lot going for it in terms of additional tangential problems it solves, so it's not completely out there to say it's possible.

then again, they could be dead wrong

that's the exciting part, who knows.

If it's legit, we'll probably know in the next two years or so as Astronomers globally will be looking.

Re: new planet maybe

would be cool if another probe was sent and it took close up pictures. would probably take decades to get that far though, or more? and it'd probably just be a featureless solid color ball. maybe not.

True.

But that orbit that they propose is eons long. The spot is probably really, really dark, cold, and small. Lots of territory to cover. Even if we don't find it, plenty of brown dwarves and rogue planets going between us and the nearest stars could be revealed.

Still think that the outer parts beyond the Oort cloud interacts with the clouds of other nearby stars like Alpha Centauri. Imagine a planet that figure 8s both our system and it.

Sedna, at its closest approach, for example, would take 24 and a half years to reach from here using a space probe. To put that into perspective New Horizons only took 9 years to get from here to Pluto.

No I don't

Just make an exception for pluto

Like I said fuck the scientists and their consistency
