Humans need struggle.

It seems like humans need struggle in order to feel fulfilled. Without struggle, whether from an external source or pushing yourself to your physical and mental limits, you'll inevitably feel like you're living a pointless existence.

Do you agree or disagree with this?

It's trivial to obtain food, water, and shelter in modern society, as long as you aren't picky about jobs. What happens in future 1st world societies when everything is so abundant that basic universal income is created, completely eliminating the need to work in order to survive?

Also virtual reality. Imagine being to live out all of your fantasies for the rest of your life. You can have fun in fantasy game worlds, fuck whoever and whatever you want, etc. Would this actually be fulfilling when a push of a button or a single thought manifests whatever you want?

I'm pretty sure whatever is considered the "top" will always be saught after and competed for. There's a lot of people willing to do whatever it takes to "win" the game for whatever personal reasons.

The course of history is only truly altered by a few people to begin with. Nothing will change substantially post-scarcity.

But Destroy All Humans?

I mean economic struggle might come to an end, but what about religious or ideological struggle? Like "Hey my idea is better than yours so I bomb your city!"

Maybe when we reach post-scarcity we'll nearly exterminate ourselves. Then the true human struggle will begin. It shall be the re-birth of mankind, the latest since Noah's flood! THE TRUTH MUST BE SOUGHT! ENLIGHTENMENT IS OUR DUTY!

Re: Humans need struggle.

I don't think there's gonna be a "post scarcity" in our lifetimes. We can't make shit out of nothing yet. Even if everyone on the planet made 100k in real terms, had that much spending power I mean, people would be clawing at eachother to obtain the still scarce goods. If there were no "scarce goods", we would find something hard to make or get, and that would be the equivalent of "gold", which people will want and work for. People will want and work for power positions. People will want and work for societal respect. Goods don't even matter that much in terms of how hard someone works. After 40k income per year happiness doesn't really go up by our measures. It's the status people are after. It's the respect and admiration.

I think post-scarcity will just create boredom, hence why I think humans need struggle of some kind. If they don't have one, you'll have a groups of people who invent one, and groups of people who retreat into decadence and pleasures to distract themselves.

^ Not just limited to a post-scarcity society of course. Does this not happen as society gets wealthier?

Re: Humans need struggle.

Well post-scarcity won't change human nature will it? Like absent said, we'll still be competing with one another over power and stuff...and power isn't some resource you can equally distribute. It's gotta be taken from someone to grow your own.

Re: Humans need struggle.

Well it's easy. Once we all have our basic needs fulfilled people will search for fulfillment themselves. Art. Computers. Science. Recreational Drugs. Literature.
Just try it, do it, or - in case of universal income - make career as something and become elite at it.

Re: Humans need struggle.

I think that we could emulate the feeling of real struggle with virtual reality.
I think though that once that occurs (and even to an extent now) it will result in a population bottleneck because most people will just stop living and reproducing

Re: Humans need struggle.

This implies we'll reach "post scarcity" before we are able to genetically modify brains and/or augment them. I'd wager you can just select for outcomes "hard work" produces.

Re: Humans need struggle.

The two issues I have with this presumably 'default programming' is firstly, if an individual knows that his only great ambition is unattainable and always in struggle, and secondly, when an individual has no motivation (and may never gain motivation) to struggle.

Then an individual will always be in struggle and remain unfulfilled. Worse so when the individual understands this. Then life is merely dominated by instinct and impulse.
